I was up late as usual watching some of the late nite celeb news programs . One would think as much as we pay for cable television there would be something worth watching other than people calling in about Lindsey Lohan, but go figure. I managed to drift in and out of sleep, until something caught my eyes and ears. Celeb mistresses, i.e. Tiger Woods, Jesse James, Eliot Spitzer so on and so forth.
I have always been one to say that intelligent people are intitled to a moment of ignorance every now and then, so I contiuned to watch this madness. Then, suddenly I found my thoughts going back to the simplier days of my childhood, back when the “it takes a village to raise a child”, women in the neighborhood looked out for each other and having a nosy neighbor didn’t cause so much drama. I thought about Ms. Di. Ms. Di was a mid twenties, carmel complexion, thick single mother of 2 who could stop traffic. I am certain that if Beyonce wasn’t a child like I was at this time men would push her down a flight of stairs to get to Ms. Di. When she moved into the neighborhood she was welcomed by some of the women with open arms, her kids played with myself and the neighborhood kids and she was even a frequent face at some of the get togethers. However; there was a dirty little secret that only the hood gossip queen knew. Ms. Di was the neighborhood whore. Those little comments such as, “ girl your husband sure is good with his hands”, “I have been looking for someone to cut my grass (and me too possibly) do you think your wife would mind” and “ my car has been acting up, you mind taking a look” were nothing but bait. I never will forget about seeing the “yard man” tiptoe down the block while his wife was attending church, or the associate minister stopping by every single day when his wife and kids were out of town visting family. Once word of such activity reached the right ears, every decent woman in the neighborhood watched, listened and waited; when the gossip was found to be true they went in for the kill. The” hey girl” greetings stopped, men were warned” if I catch you even looking at that B**** I’ll snap your neck”, there were no more invites given to Ms. Di to the get togethers and I will not even mention the wives of her many suitors reactions. Just like that, it was over and she moved out of the neighborhood. Good ridance, then again this was 1987.
Here we are 2010, and being the other woman is big business. Karrine “Superhead” Stephans novels had landed her on Oprah, New York Times Best Seller List, Magazine articles and several radio shows. Unfortunately, after the release of a porn dvd and a tell all documentary entitled Kiss & Tail who she truly is has been exposed in great detail, but she still got rich all this from her being a video chick for 1 year. Tiger Woods mistress Rachel Uchitel alleged 10 million dollar pay day for keeping quiet, and how many more of the” Tiger Beat Posse” have we seen on t.v. and in the press. Ashley Dupree really did it for me though, this little girl went from being the infamous “Eliot Spitzer Call Girl” is now a New York Times Advice Columnist! Where they do that at? I went to college for 7 years, this chick went to the Waldorf Astoria and got her knees dirty. Many young writers would kill to work for the Times, heck I am one of them. I would like to leave you all with a question, just as I did in my last blog : What has happened in society that allows people not to run to the defense of the wife and children? What makes the public place a spotlight on the mistresss instead of giving her a “scarlet letter” and not running her out of town?
